Magonia: Running to the Heavens

Mixed-Media Analog Collage, 50x40 cm, Found Material, Japanese Watercolor and Gold Leaf Paint, Bombay Ink on Watercolor Paper

Exhibition: Places that Aren’t, Božidarac National Gallery, Belgrade, Serbia, 2025

“For up in the sky there are cities made by the witches and wizards who were once driven out of paradise or who left this world, and they have made for themselves another world in heaven.” - Charles Godfrey Leland, Etruscan Roman Remains

Drifting among storm-wreathed clouds, the flying city of Magonia sails the sky like a phantom galleon, its spires catching lightning as easily as moonlight. Born of tempest and legend, it harbors skyfarers and dreamers who barter in winds, secrets, and stolen grains - with ships of every shape and size making port in the silver clouds. But when the farmer on earthly soil awakens to find his crops stolen, was it really the floating city’s pirating sky brigades who stole his wheat, or is he childishly looking for shapes in the clouds to blame his problems on? - Moshe Shamah
