Owing much to the Greek progenitors, Western society as we know it spiritually dedicates itself to the tenants of the Ancient Athenian and Spartan city state - democracy and dialogue on one hand, and the ferocity needed to protect your home on the other. The Pen. The Sword. One has to wonder, does this binary not get tiresome, does it not lend itself to the same repetitive wound? Did the precursors of Western civilization fashion their gods and idols, not as exemplars to admire, but rather, divine excuses for the ugliest, dark parts of their nature? Is it all but a futile excuse to wash our hands of senseless sectarianism and internal strife? - Moshe Shamah
